Munyu is a women’s association active in the Comoé, Léraba and Kénédougou provinces of western Burkina Faso along the border with Mali and Côte d’Ivoire. ‘Munyu’ means ‘Patience, Tolerance, and Giving of Oneself’ in Diola, the local language. Established in 1992, Munyu has an exclusively female membership comprising 185 groups made up of some 10,000 women. Of these, 90% live in rural areas and are principally engaged in agricultural activities. Munyu’s mission is to improve the status of women and promote their well-being by raising their socio-economic status and their awareness of their rights. Its programs focus on education and health for women; knowledge of the environment and natural resources; financial training and management; and communication, particularly through its own community radio station.

This grant will strengthen the organizational capacity of 34 rural women’s groups, focusing on group savings, reinvestment of profits through a revolving funds, and accounting. Munyu will support each group in production, processing, storage and marketing of agricultural crops. Additionally, Munyu will use this grant to monitor the results of awards to 26 of its member groups that benefitted from New Field support in 2012.

This grant enables a Munyu representative to attend a regional meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on land acquisition in West Africa and provide a gender lens on action research methodologies.

With this grant, Munyu will award 26 community grants to its member groups for income-generation activities such as raising and marketing sheep and pigs, growing and marketing cereal grains, and processing and marketing non-timber forest products. The grant also supports technical assistance to strengthen leadership and management capacity. Additionally, the grant supports research by 30 rural women’s groups on ecological rice production in the Comoé, Léraba and Kénédougou provinces.

This grant supports Munyu to provide information and education to rural women about access to land and methods of rice cultivation in the fertile areas of western Burkina Faso. This grant also supports two members of the Munyu staff to participate in financial management training in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
