The Society for Radio Democracy (Radio Democracy)
Freetown, Sierra Leone
Radio Democracy was founded in 1997 by and for civil society as an underground radio station to bring non-partisan information about the war to Sierra Leoneans. Today, it continues its tradition of independence by striving to provide objective information to Sierra Leoneans on good governance, transparency and accountability with a particular focus on gender equality. With over 800,000 listeners, it is considered a vital instrument for advocacy on issues relevant to marginalized groups, including women and young people.
2010 | $135,000 | 3 years |
This grant enables Radio Democracy to expand its reach to the entire country through the installation of satellite and digital equipment at a new site. With broader access to women listeners, particularly rural women, it plans to bring women’s voices onto the national stage, and to increase their awareness on the importance of participation in leadership and decision-making processes. |
