Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL)
San Jose, USA

Founded in 2001, Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL) establishes small village libraries in rural Africa where both children and adults can read books and newspapers. The libraries provide a place for all users to put the literary skills they have learned into practice in order to feed their imaginations and address the development needs of the community. FAVL has established and operates ten village libraries in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania.

This grant enables FAVL to improve the facilities in two village libraries in Burkina Faso so that they are more relevant and accessible to girls. Specifically, the grant will provide books and a special reading corner dedicated to girls; micro-books oriented to the activities of girls in the village; reading programs for children with female reading coaches; separate latrines for girls and boys; and ‘reading circles’ for use by girls and boys to read and play games.
