Institute for Food and Development Policy/ Food First
Oakland, USA

The Institute for Food and Development Policy, also known as Food First, was established in 1975. Its mission is to end the injustices that cause hunger, poverty and environmental degradation throughout the world. Food First carries out research, analysis, advocacy and education for informed citizen engagement with the institutions and policies that control food production, distribution and access. Its work informs and amplifies the voices of those striving for food sovereignty, whereby people have the right to healthy and culturally appropriate food and can determine their own ecologically sustainable farming methods.

2009$6,9856 months
This grant enables Food First to provide interpretation during planning meetings in Bamako, Mali for a campaign to promote agro-ecology. The high quality interpretation allows French-speaking rural women’s groups to participate fully in the meetings with other English-speaking attendees.
2007$22,5406 months
This grant enables Food First to support African women farmers and representatives of farming organizations to attend a series of conferences and field visits in Mali led by local farmer associations. The conferences are designed to launch a public information campaign among farmers across Africa about ecologically sound agricultural alternatives, and to strengthen networks that enhance food security, food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture.
